The 12 Causes of Chapped Lips You Should Be Aware Of

Lack of Moisture

Everyday exposure to the sun’s heat, dust carried by the wind and vehicles, and smoke coming from cars, buildings, and people are only some of the factors that can cause dry lips. People are exposed outside for several hours, and since the lips do not have a strong protective layer that shields them from sunburn, they get inflamed and eventually crack, losing their moisture. When the lips get severely dry, they peel off and eventually bleed, making it extremely painful for an individual to eat, drink, brush the teeth, and apply chemical products.

Apply a high-quality lip balm or moisturizer. Avoid picking or licking the lips using saliva; instead, drinks plenty of water or fluids and increase the moisture in the air around the vicinity by using a humidifier. Dry surroundings aggravate dry and scaly lips. Sometimes, when they get severe, they will cause infection, and it would take a few days (sometimes weeks) to bring back the moisture and tenderness of the lips. Infected lips tend to have skin discoloration; pinkish lips become dark, sore, and itchy.
