Certain Types of Food
Belching can be triggered by eating certain types of foods and drinks. Some of the typical culprits are foods with high sugar, fiber, and starch, like beans, broccoli, onions, peas, cauliflower, raisins, bananas, and lentils. Spicy food and food with high acidities, like tomatoes, onions, and citrus fruits, can also trigger excessive belching. For some, eating too much spicy food can cause burning sensations when burping.
Eating hard candies and chewing gums makes a person swallow loads of air. Sugar-free candies have sugar alcohols that the stomach can’t quickly process. As a result, instead of being broken down, they linger around and create gas. These gases will then escape through the esophagus and mouth.
Some beverages can also cause excessive burping. Bubbly drinks like soda and beer have high levels of carbon dioxide that add extra air to the stomach. The carbon dioxide goes back up to the esophagus and escapes through the mouth. Sipping hot drinks like coffee and tea can also trigger belching.
