Dermatologists warn patients that certain medications can aggravate and increase the possibility of back acne. In addition, these medications have specific side effects that can lead to acne breakout as they prevent other medical conditions.
Health experts identify oral corticosteroids, testosterone, oral contraceptive agents, and anabolic steroids as among the medications that cause acne breakouts. Oral corticosteroids cause steroid acne by increasing yeast production within the hair follicle. Although oral corticosteroids are typically used to reduce inflammation, reddening, and swelling, their side effects can be quite serious. Health experts recommend those taking this medication to stick to a potassium-rich diet or add proteins to their diet.
For females, taking oral contraceptives, injecting medroxyprogesterone, or implanting intrauterine progesterone can also cause acne breakouts. This is because they can reduce the circulating sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Meanwhile, bodybuilders who inject themselves with various forms of anabolic steroids such as stanozolol, danazol, and nandrolone can experience acne fulminans and acne conglobata. Although steroids can help increase muscle mass rapidly, severe acne is a huge possibility.
