Promotes Healthy Heart Circulation
When most people think of heart disease, they imagine a coronary event, where the blood flow to the heart is blocked, and thrombosis occurs as a result. However, there are many more types of heart disease than this. The arteries can be at risk for any number of issues that prevent them from delivering blood effectively.
The most common type is atherosclerosis, which is caused by plaque buildup on the walls of your arteries. This reduces the diameter and flow of blood through those arteries and puts stress on them. In response, your blood tries to compensate by increasing blood pressure to push more blood through the blocked area—but this increase in pressure can then put stress on your heart.
Working long hours at a desk with little movement can contribute to plaque buildup, but standing desks can help combat this issue. In addition, standing while working increases your blood flow and circulation, which can lower blood pressure and reduce the amount of stress placed on your heart, effectively giving it a rest from all that extra strain. Using a standing desk also takes some weight off your legs, which allows for an overall decrease in pressure that’s exerted on your cardiovascular system.
